A minimum of 15 years of progressively more responsible research administration leadership roles, with significant experience building strategic partnerships to improve processes and facilitate innovation; experienced with developing, implementing and measuring strategies and programs A Master's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Management or a related field of study required; or equivalent work experience. Experience in an academic or similar work environment with a record of success in roles involving extensive work with faculty and a deep appreciation for institutional culture Comprehensive knowledge of research compliance domains, including the protection of human subjects in research, humane care and use of animals, export controls, conflict of interest policies, research integrity, and investigations drug services Strong collaboration, conflict management, political acumen and service orientation. Strong communication and listening skills. Ability to establish trust and credibility. Description of Duties: Reporting to and serving as a key partner to the President & CEO, the VP Research (VPR) will be an accessible, visible senior representative of the research administration enterprise. Bridge-building and problem-solving are integral to the responsibilities of this position and the VPR will play an important liaison and resource role to the Investigators and administrators of the research theme groups, senior leadership, and will serve on relevant committees and working groups. The VPR is charged with leading and managing a range of activities to address an array of priorities, key opportunities, and challenges of the Lundquist Institute's research administration enterprise. In addition, the VPR is the institutional official responsible for oversight of the areas such as Grants/Contracts and Sponsored Projects Accounting (Pre and Post Award), Clinical Trials/Industry Sponsored Agreements, Research Compliance, Investigational Drug Services, Environmental Health & Safety, Core Equipment and the Vivarium.
  • Responsible for the management and professional development of a large, high-performing team whose work is defined by quality, timeliness, and responsiveness to the diverse needs of Investigators, senior management, and agencies/sponsors. The VPR will leverage the skills and expertise of the team, provide opportunities for on-going learning and professional development, and make strategic decisions about staffing models, including hiring, performance management and retention decisions. In addition, will effectively coach, mentor, assess, and contribute to building and maintaining high morale within the Institute for the staff.
  • While the office is divided into functional units to handle different components of the work, the VPR will continue to build a unified and integrated organization focused on teamwork, compliance and extraordinary customer service, in which everyone understands the importance of their work and the work of others in their shared efforts to support the overall mission of the Lundquist Institute.
  • Maintains working knowledge of, and ensure compliance with, all federal (e.g., Uniform Guidance), state, foundation and Institute policies, procedures and guidelines in the management of sponsored research-funded projects and research operations.
  • Directs communication efforts to inform campus research community of new funding opportunities, regulatory developments, and changes in governmental research policies.
  • Provides administrative guidance and support to Investigators and other research staff seeking outside funding for research and special sponsored institutional projects
  • Makes long term strategic decisions concerning organizational structures of assigned units and resources, research policy, research administration operations, and research enterprise-wide information systems.
  • Advises and interacts with senior management in administration, compliance, and research areas on specific research compliance and policy situations, regulatory enforcement negotiations, and/or being an ambassador for the operations of the research enterprise. In support of research, outreach, and public service missions. VPR negotiates and directs complex agreements with other institutions, federal, state, local, and foreign governmental entities and foundations.
  • The VPR is a key representative of the Institute in interactions within the Institute and beyond. The VPR develops strong relationships with counterparts with sponsors, regulators, collaborators, and others both nationally and internationally. The VPR will collaborate within the Institute, locally and nationwide to develop policies, innovative programs, and best practices, and to monitor changes in regulatory requirements and trends. The VPR is an active participant in professional advocacy groups, including COGR, FDP, NCURA and others, and represents the Institute at national and international meetings and leads and supports sponsored programs-related and research compliance initiatives locally and nationally. The VPR will be involved with governmental regulatory agencies and professional organizations at every level.
