About this Position:

Developing and executing product and business strategy in a world of rapid technological and social change requires a highly capable, highly knowledgeable, and highly engaged team. CASE and Energy Business Unit is tasked with navigating the path for Honda's future Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric, and Energy products, services, and businesses towards Honda's Triple Zero goals of 100% carbon neutral product, 100% resource circularity, and 100% use of clean energy. The team will focus on building and sustaining Honda's core brand values and enhancing brand image and competitiveness in the marketplace by innovating, incubating, selecting, developing, applying, and operating new businesses, features, products, and services with responsibility for their profitability, competitiveness, and customer satisfaction for Honda in North America.

As our society shifts to a future that is powered by renewable electricity, energy storage in the form of hydrogen may become a very important decarbonization technology and new business opportunity for Honda. This Senior Hydrogen Business Development Lead II role is responsible for leading Honda's hydrogen product, service, and business strategy and business development activities in North America. This role is responsible for researching, developing, and applying new hydrogen generation, distibution, and sales business models, new product applications for Honda's hydrogen fuel cell stacks, new applications for Honda's electrolysis technology, and new services for the products that are developed. This role is accountable for the business and technical competence of the strategies that are developed. This is a Unit Lead position with the responsibility to grow the team to execute the new business strategies and opportunities that are identified.

This role will interface with regulators and legislators and industry associations to develop the policy and regulatory framework for new hydrogen products and services to thrive in the market, for example, the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership, US Department of Energy, US Treasury, US Department of Transportation, Alliance of Automotive Innovation, California Electric Transport Coalition, Clean Energy Buyers Alliance, Rocky Mountain Institute, California and other state Energy Commisisons, State Public Utilities Commissions. Understanding the perspectives of a diverse range of coalition participants and regulators while advocating for the best solution for Honda and our customers is key to success in this role.

This role requires frequent coordination, communication, and review of wide-ranging business and technical information with external business partners, suppliers, customers, and internal stakeholders such as Honda's IT team, Product Planning, Service, Quality, Sales, Finance, Customer Experience, Law, Honda Motor Co in Japan, Honda Japan R&D in Japan, and other pertinent business units.

Responsibilities include:

  • Hydrogen Business Strategy Development and Execution:
    • Keep current with and understand the social, technological and business trends impacting hydrogen demain. Develop and maitain the business and technology roadmaps that inform the strategy. Synthesize the business strategy into clear, concise, actionable steps. Globally correlate strategy with senior management, as well as HM, 4MOC, HG, HDMA executives. Identify key initiatives to be undertaken to execute the strategy and estimate the resources necessary to execute those initiatives.
    • Lead the product and business proposal development and obtain approval of financially sustainable business models. This includes any contract development with business partners, financial and term negotiation and legal agreement execution with selected vendors and service providers, and business Hydrogen Business Strategy Development and Execution:
    • Keep current with and understand the social, technological and business trends impacting hydrogen demain. Develop and maitain the business and technology roadmaps that inform the strategy. Synthesize the business strategy into clear, concise, actionable steps. Globally correlate strategy with senior management, as well as HM, 4MOC, HG, HDMA executives. Identify key initiatives to be undertaken to execute the strategy and estimate the resources necessary to execute those initiatives.
    • Lead the product and business proposal development and obtain approval of financially sustainable business models. This includes any contract development with business partners, financial and term negotiation and legal agreement execution with selected vendors and service providers, and business partners. Must propose for final executive approval in a time-sensitive market launch to maximize operational profit.
      • Strategic Initiative Execution, Leadership, and Reporting:
        • Lead cross functional teams to execute the business and product strategy. Set project schedules, budgets, lead with a vision, guide teams to execute, and follow-up relentlessly.
        • Develop and maintain project management reporting documents to ensure that stakeholders throughout the organization are informed of the progress of initiatives.
        • Proactively escalate issues requiring senior management support and manage issues through resolution. Proactively inform senior management of material decisions and project status, seeking understanding, alignment and approval.
        • Incorporate principles of Agile project management
        • Business Operations Launch:
          • For any new business, lead the launch and scale-up activies, including creating, updating, and maintaining clear Standard Operating Procedures to facilitate business operations by the New Business Operations team.
          • Ensure customer facing experience is best-in-class, and ensure quick resolution of launch issues. Create an operational acceptance criteria to push the assigned projects into a standardized, normal business operation for AHM
          • Assistant Manager Function:
            • As an Assistant Manager, identify the staffing and talent needs of the unit. Seek approval for creating those positions, and interview and recommend for hire the successful candidates.
            • Perform assistant manager responsibilities (HR, training, associates career development, employee engagement, weekly 1on1)
            • Take care of associate and contingent human resource issues. Provide necessary on-boarding, job transfer training, associates career development and facilitate employee engagement.
            • Hold weekly 1on1 to achieve those objectives
              • External Facing Communications:
                • Interface with potential customers in a sales role to promote Honda's products and services.
                  • Interface with regulatory agencies to facilitate policy and market development.
                  • Interface with suppliers, dealers, and business partners to facilitate new business development
                    • Budget Management:
                      • Responsible to plan and report project teams budgets
                      • Facilitate purchase orders
                      • Track spending plan vs actual
                      • Accountable for the results of the expenditures
                      • Maintain current records Who we are seeking:

                        Required Work Experience:
                        • Minimum 10 years of related hydrogen industry, energy industry, or utility industry experience, ideally in new product and Business Development, Business planning, and execution
                        • Experience with developing sales channels, coordination with product planning, service, quality, sales, finance, customer experience, law, and other pertinent business units
                        • Experience with creating financial models to predict product and service sales
                        • Experience leading complex projects with multiple stakeholders
                        • Good negotiation skills, adepts at translating product value to business value
                        • Capable of Drafting and reviewing complex contracts, agreements, and detailed scopes-of-work Required Education:
                          • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or Equivalent work experience
                          • MBA is a plus Desired skills:
                            • Excellent planning, negotiating, analytical and presentation skills
                            • Understanding of business model development
                            • Technical orientation and understanding is preferred
